Technical Feasibility of Flettner Rotor Integration on a Jack-Up Vessel

Offshore Independents

Project description:
This MSc thesis investigates the technical feasibility of integrating a Flettner rotor on a jack-up vessel, with its primary focus on the conceptual development and structural integrity of the proposed design. This design aims to improve the overall propulsion of the vessel, contributing to a reduction in terms of fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions.

OI’s scope of work:

  • Fuel savings of Flettner rotor implementation
    • Aerodynamic behaviour of a Flettner rotor
    • Hydrodynamic resistance a jack-up vessel
    • Rotor deployment strategy
    • Power input rotor
  • Concept design
    • Rotor design criteria
    • Rotor placement
    • Material selection
    • Quantified design selection process based on performance
  • Structural analysis
    • Loading conditions
    • Failure mechanisms
    • Analytical calculations and analysis
    • Numerical calculations (ANSYS Mechanical)
